A Journey Into History

Once again, Deborah Harkness brings another masterpiece to life. Shadow of Night had me gripping onto the pages, at the edge of my seat, up at all hours of the night waiting to find out what happens to Diana Bishop and her beloved Matthew de Clairmont. As someone who quickly loses herself in history when given the chance, I was fascinated by Harkness' attention to detail and incorporation of significant historical figures during the lovebirds' trip into the past. Diana and Matthew meet new struggles as they find themselves in sixteenth century Europe. How will Diana fit in when she so clearly stands out, even in her own time? Can they possibly find a witch to teach Diana to control her power in a world where witches are being searched out and killed for being different? Will their relationship withstand the continual challenges sent their way? Can the two find the mysterious Ashmole 782?

I cannot answer these questions for you because, alas, I do not write reviews that give away even a hint of details about the book. That, my friend, is for you to discover. I will say, however, that if you enjoyed A Discovery of Witches, you will most certainly enjoy Shadow of Night. You will quickly get lost in Elizabethan London and find yourself talking in more formal tones during everyday conversation. You may even plan to dress in the morning and realize you only have jeans and t-shirts, not flowing skirts and petticoats. Set aside a weekend to be swept up in this beautifully written, historically influenced love story of struggle and learning how to overcome your deepest fears and inner struggles. Do not be discouraged by the book's length either. You will love every minute of it just as I did. My only disappointment is that I have to wait so long for the third book to be released.

A Discovery.

Just try to guess what book this is about, just try! Ok, good guess, it's Deborah Harkness' A Discovery of Witches and my mind is completely blown. Deborah brings together a beautiful mix of history, romance, suspense, and mystery. When the book first came out, I was interested mostly because I liked the color of the cover (yes, I'm superficial like that). I read the synopsis and my interest was peaked, but unfortunately the price and my long list of "Need to Reads" seemed to be looming over me. Needless to say, I began reading it last Tuesday after a friend recommended it to me and loaned me hers (my friends have the best tastes when it comes to books).

So Tuesday at midnight it began, and on it continued into Wednesday while I sat patiently at the courthouse to hear if they wanted me to be a juror. Reading for eight hours instead of correcting tests was time well spent. I could not put this book down, a difficult task since the book is nearly 600 pages. Finally, I thought, an excellent fantasy read that I don't have to pull out my high school Aeropostale clothes to buy (If you have no idea what I mean, young women such as myself may feel slightly bashful to admit to the amount of young adult novels they fawn over). I am going to digress for a moment, and please don't stop reading at what I am about to say: A Discovery of Witches is my new Twilight. There, I said it. Why? Twilight brought me into the world of YA. I was familiar with Tolstoy, Hardy, Lawrence and all the other authors whose classy romance fiction novels have been considered Literature, and have been read in many English classes. However, once I read Twilight, I was a goner. I reacted the way every author wishes his or her readers to react and when I was done reading, I read the series again. I am pretty sure I was in love with Edward, and not the "oh my gosh I love that character" kind of love. I mean when another girl said she loved him, I became the jealous girlfriend and had to stop talking to said female before I destroyed her pretty hair. So, Twilight was my go to book to get those fuzzy feelings.

It's been a few years since I read the books and I have probably found ones that I love more, but that first reaction will always stick with me. That is how I feel about Deborah's book. I slept only 8 hours this weekend because I did not want to stop reading. I forgot to eat meals and nearly refused to go Christmas tree shopping with my family just so I could keep reading. Then, when I finished all 594 pages, I wished there were more. Now I constantly fantasize about the world and the characters, and I have decided I want to go back to school to study history. I want Diana's job. And I wouldn't complain if I happened to meet a handsome vampire while in the Bodleian Library either. So, let's just say I am enthralled.

Do I need to say it was well written? I think my ranting and raving say it all. I can't really say much else because my discovery of this book (see what I did there?) and my love for it were so unexpected that I would not have wanted anyone to tell me anything more than the synopsis. The story progresses from Diana's seemingly innocent historian life to utter chaos in a matter of weeks, but it feels like a lifetime, even for the characters. The unexpected mysteries behind Diana's heritage slowly start to trickle into the story, and like all unexpected twists and turns, they are utterly brilliant. Okay, okay, sometimes I had to step back and think, "Wait, what? Seriously?" But Harkness incorporates every detail so well that even the things you weren't expecting or didn't even want to know make the story what it is, a masterpiece.

Oh and don't forget Diana's stubborn insistence on being independent. Strong female protagonists have become more and more common and Diana is no exception. She will do what she wants to do, say what she wants to say, and isn't afraid to do the exact opposite of someone's good advice just for the sake of not being told what to do. But there is a flaw in her need to take care of herself, and Diana soon realizes it. Sometimes, I just wanted to smack her and tell her to get over it and let the guy open the door for you, but that's Diana and I love her.

All in all, an excellent read and a must have for my growing library. Okay, I'm done with this completely random and terrible review, because the sequel was just delivered and I am going into my cave.

Female Protagonist

All these books with beautiful love stories and strong female protagonists leave me with such conflicting emotions: Treat me like a damsel in distress so I can get angry and assert my stubborn independence, but fall for you nonetheless. It doesn't help that the gentleman in question is drop dead gorgeous, mysterious and brooding half the time, but with a soft spot for characters I can relate to. Damn you fiction. You make me wish there were evil monsters set out to kill me just so I can fall madly in love with the man I would give up everything for but not find peace together until after 1500 pages.

So I thought I was crafty enough ...

In an effort to save money these holidays, I have decided to make all the gifts this year. Pinterest has been a big help in coming up with ideas for people who appreciate home decor items. It also got me thinking about crocheting. I have been knitting for about eight years now. I never took it further than plain scarves, but last summer I learned to reverse stitch and started adding designs into my creations. Unfortunately, most of the fun ideas I find online involve crocheting, NOT knitting. So I decided to try. I'm too cheap to take a class and don't have to time to find someone to teach me. My impatience led me to teaching myself from a pamphlet I picked up at Michael's. I found a template for an easy scarf and spent about four hours making this monstrosity. As awful as it is I can't bring myself to unravel it or throw it away. Therefore, I have decided to give it to my mother as a washcloth. (One for cups or other dishes with small openings).

A Peak Inside...

Anyone who knows me is familiar with my seemingly unrelated and complete random string of conversation topics. I used to have to explain the steps for how my mind found its way from one topic to another. Now, most people either just accept me as strange, or know that there is at least some reasoning behind my drastic change in conversation topic. For those who want a look inside my mind, I created this on a day when my mind was roaming only mildly free, but was being bombarded by my desire to live inside the books I read.

Okay, okay, so I may have also created it to submit something for an application I am submitting. Yes, I realize I have no artistic talent, but I couldn't just sit there and write a boring old paragraph about why they should pick me, right?

The Road

No one ever told her to save herself. She never knew she could be her own hero. She would sit by the window on long, lonely nights, waiting for someone to tell her everything would turn out all right. The cars would drive by, shining sickly yellow lights in her eyes. One of them will save me, she would say. One of them will stop. They will take me away and I will leave here forever. The cars never stopped. No one ever took her hand, showed her the way.

One day she started walking. She didn't know her destination or what she would do when she got there, but her feet called to her. The road called to her. A voice somewhere long forgotten told her that this was her story. It was time to be the main character.

Finally Home

The cold water enveloped her. Its current caused her body to spin in slow circles. The air outside was that of a dying summer day, but it was not the warmth she saught, but the feel of the icy silk that now ran over her skin. She was home.

Adelade knew she was smiling, a feeling long forgotten. She could feel it the moment she jumped into the pool. The water was where she wanted to be. Her skin felt too hot and the air too dry. It was a rare treat to enjoy the cool water in her parents' pool. Her life had taken her far away for so long, she almost forgot what it was like to be in the water.

After swimming several laps, she let her body float. The pool filter created a current that rotated her around the center of the circular pool. The setting sun created red sunbursts through her eyelids. She opened her eyes to the underside of trees. There was no other time of day that was more beautiful. The sun shown through the trees to create a spectrum of oranges and greens. So many trees spilled over the pool, trying to peak at the beauty of a girl at peace. And she could not help but widen her smile at the beauty of life surrounding her. This was bliss.

Dear Destiny

Dear Destiny,

I think it is time you and I met. You have spent long enough in hiding. My trials and tribulations are not yet over, but I am ready to face them with the knowledge of who you are. Do not be afraid to introduce yourself. Have some courage. I have found my own. Together, we can fulfill our purpose. You and I will become a team that can conquer anything the world throws at us. What do you say?

Truly yours,

Daydream Believer

Tears of Sad Happiness...Is that even possible?

I just finished Rapture, the fourth book in the Fallen Series. I loved the series when it first came out and followed it as each new book was published. I am a sucker for love stories and this series provides the love story of the ages, as it is actually called by one of the characters in the book. I had an idea of the mystery behind who Luce was and what her destiny was, though I had a minor detail or two wrong. The ending is tragically beautiful and made me cry. I am not afraid to say it. I have a lot invested in these characters. But why, oh why, does it have to end?

One can only hope they have their own Daniel Grigori to always find them and sweep them off their feet again and again. Oh how I long to gaze into those violet eyes and see pure love and devotion reflected in them...

Pointless Rantings of a Mind Stretched Too Thin

Why is money so important? It allows you to provide for yourself and loved ones. It provides you with a means to escape the reality of the everyday. It is a means in which to obtain lavish, unnecessary things that can make you look more or less important. It is a status symbol.

Why is status important? Well, to be honest, the only reason I can come up with is our instinct drive to be the best. It is present in all animals. We believe we are evolved, but most of our actions can be explained by inborn instincts that we learned from the beginnings of time.

What am I getting at? If we are evolved as we say we are, then we can attempt to ignore our baser instincts and decide status is unimportant. Therefore, money is unimportant regardless of its necessity in everyday life.

So why am I stressing about my bills at the end of the month? If I only want to be happy, why am I worried? Money can't buy happiness. No, but it can buy almost anything else. That is the problem.

So, what am I to do? Since I can't implement a new bartering system and I can't win the lottery (yet), I just have to watch my spending and GET OVER IT.

If the world were backwards...

Last night, as I was trying to fall asleep, a thought occurred to me. How strange would the world be if things were done backwards? Different scenarios ran through my head and I couldn't help myself but smile at the thought of some of these. Can you imagine?

Reading: Where we start from right to left, bottom to top. We know the ending and learn the beginning of the story as we progress through the book.

Mathematics: A subject in which a given solution is manipulated to identify the original equation it came from. (I've actually done this in my math classes to help students understands the steps to solving equations)

Golf: A sport where athletes move a ball down a portion of land (green and fairway) to a tee. This is done by swinging a magic club counter-clockwise. The club attracts golf balls and different clubs can attract golf balls and different distances. The player who can move the ball the furthest distance in the shortest about of swings wins.

Tennis: Well, this doesn't really change, except the beginning and end. A ball is thrown onto a court where athletes volley, hitting the ball back and fourth using rackets. An athlete catches the ball to gain points.

Jobs: Unless you are one of the lucky ones that absolutely love your job, this should apply to you. So, for you, a job would be like paying to do what you love while most people around you are miserable, which is almost like going to an amusement park. People pay employers to be given numerous tasks to do. Often these tasks are stress-inducing, and time consuming.

Eating: Regurgitating food.

See what I mean?

Holy Twists and Turns Batman!

Since this blog is for me and what is on my mind, I am writing this post to alleviate all the thoughts poking and prodding my skull, trying to escape. And you ask me, "What is on your mind Mrs. Snowflakes?" Well, let me tell you. Daughter of Smoke and Bone is on my mind. I just finished this book after an outstanding recommendation from a friend and I have to say, I am crazy in love. I am passionate for YA reads and I love me some romance, but it's the adventure I want most. Boy, does this story give you adventure and mystery too! Who is Karou? Why do people keep asking her this question? It seems such a simple question, but it has such a profound premise that you won't know it until it hits you. Laine Taylor provides beautiful writing with little hints to the story's plot that you don't even know are significant until the very end.

I have to say, I am the type of reader that typically can call the shots early on since I read all similar types of books. This book, however, had a few twists that I wasn't expecting. Some of them may not have been huge, but oh were they good. If you like YA reads that provide you with an escape into the rabbit hole, then look no further. Mystery, fantasy, soul-searching, love, revenge, and adventure are all packed into this beautifully crafted story. Oh, and did I mention one gorgeous and tortured soul that just may sweep you off your feet? Go ahead, see for yourself.

Somebody's Number One

Everyone deserves to be someone's first priority. If you are in a relationship, it goes without saying that your significant other should have you as their number one and them as yours. Sometimes things don't work out the way you plan and you realize you are no longer number one. Do you even know how far down the list you are? Don't worry about it. You can't change how people feel and they will one day realize their mistake. Do not forget, however, that you need to be someone's first priority. So, if your significant other, for whatever reason, doesn't put you first, it is your responsibility to put yourself first. If he or she can't put you first, then it is time for him or her to come second for you. Why? Because, as I've said, you need to be somebody's number one. If you aren't number one for your significant other, then you need to be number one for yourself.

No more moping around. Go out and find your happiness.

The Little Moments

It is never too early to start a bucket list. The earlier you start, the more time your have to do everything. My bucket list is full of some outlandish things, some simple things, and some things many get to enjoy on a daily basis. My bucket list is to help remind me that I need to enjoy every moment that is given to me. It is not to show me how much I wish I could do, but can't. I hope to find happiness every day, not just over the years. Take some time out of your day, think of something that will make you happy. Don't make it impossible, don't make it too simple. Make it something to accomplish. Every man should be able to look back on their life and feel no regret, feel satisfaction and happiness. I want that. So tomorrow, I start my bucket list.
